A hardy perennial with spicy leaves and white flowers attractive to bees. The name Origanum is from the Greek oros and ganos meaning joy of the mountain. It has antiseptic properties and is good made as tea for colds and coughs. It is also a weak sedative and useful for headaches and irritability. Blend with chilli and garlic and add to food. Good in pizzas, with tomatoes and pasta, egg and cheese dishes. Put in butter sauce for fish and add to meat dishes.
