An attractive self seeding annual with blue flowers, this is known as the herb of courage and was given floating in cups to soldiers. It also has the reputation for lifting the spirits, comforting the heart, driving away sorrow and added to wine - making people merry! The flowers can be frozen into ice cubes for summer drinks or candied for cake decorating and both flowers and young leaves added to salads. It is a cooling herb that soothes irritated tissues, increases perspiration, and has a mild anti - depressant and sedative effect. Like comfrey it contains small amounts of pyrrolizidine alkaloids that may cause liver damage so should not be used in excess.
