A hardy evergreen perennial with spikes of purple flowers loved by bees. The name hyssop is a very old name and can be traced back almost unchanged to the Greek Hussopos and the Hebrew Esob. Hyssop is an expectorant and used for coughs, bronchitis and chronic catarrh. Also good for the common cold, especially mixed with peppermint and elderflower. It is a strong tasting herb and can be used in small quantities to flavour meats. It produces pink, blue or white flowers and makes a good edging plant.
