A hardy perennial herb with a lemon scent and taste. It is a popular ingredient in lemon teas and has the reputation for lifting the spirit and promoting longevity. First introduced by the Romans from the Mediterranean it has been written about for centuries and is described as the elixir of life. The name Melissa comes from the Greek Melittina or honey bee because it is loved by them. It can be used fresh or dried for anxiety or depression, as a tonic for the heart and circulation, to relieve digestive tract spasms and helping with nausea and vomiting. In cooking it goes well in salads, drinks and punches, fruit salads, custards and ice cream.
