Description

  • Aromatic
  • Easy to maintain
  • Plant for pollinators
  • Use in flower arrangements

Also known as sweet Nancy, English mace flowers for a long time over the summer and is a good plant for pots. The leaves have a mild and pleasant flavour which can be used in mixed and potato salads, soups and stews. The real star of this plant are the creamy flowers that attract pollinating insects and mace is a good herb grown in a wild flower garden.

Plant Care

  • Height: 60-100cm
  • Type: Hardy
  • Aspect: Sun
  • Soil: Any/alkaline
  • Flower colour: White
  • Flowering period: June-September

This pretty herb will grow in most soils and though it loves the sun will be fine with some shade during the day. It can become a bit straggly when it flowers and may need some support if it doesn't have supporting shrubs around it or is in a container, although if you don't mind that wild kind of look then leave it be. Cut off the stems once the flowers have died in early autumn and the sprouting leaves at the base of the plant will sit there through the winter. They are quite tasty to slugs, so make sure they aren't being chomped on too much.

Usage

English mace has some of the warm vibrant notes of mace (the protective coating of the nutmeg seed). It can be added fresh to salads, rice and fish dishes. The cut flowers are very pretty in floral decorations.
