Description

  • Attractive to bees
  • Clump forming
  • Aromatic
  • Easy to maintain

An excellent flavour, although is not quite as pungent as the Greek oregano, but it makes up for that with sheer attractiveness. The small bright green and white leaves add some great colour to the garden and forms a colourful clump.

Plant care

  • Height: 30-60cm
  • Type: Hardy
  • Aspect: Sun
  • Soil: Any/alkaline
  • Flower colour: White
  • Flowering period: July - September

Oregano country cream is easy to grow either in a container or the ground. It is happy in most soil types but prefers a sunny spot and although it will manage some shade it may compromise flavour slightly. It can be left to get on with it for most of the year and will just need a haircut in late summer once the flowers have died, which will leave a good clump of leaves over winter. Oregano can be divided in autumn to make new patches elsewhere in the garden or to give to friends and neighbours.

Usage

This warm spicy herb is essential for inclusion in creamy pasta dishes, pizzas, bolognese sauce and marinades. The flavour of oregano is intensified by the sun and as it dries well, in the height of the summer when at its most fragrant and just before flowering, bunches of oregano can be hung in a warm place out of direct sun. Once dry they can be crumbled and stored in air tight containers for winter use in all the same dishes, but also try it added to home made bread.
