Description

  • Adored by cats
  • Flowers loved by bees
  • Leaves contain vitamin C
  • Strongly aromatic

Native to Europe and parts of Asia, this really is the herb for the moggy in your life. It is often dried and stuffed into cat toys, but it is as attractive to cats fresh as it is dried.

Plant Care

  • Height: 60-100cm
  • Type: Hardy
  • Aspect: Sun
  • Soil: Any/alkaline
  • Flower colour: Purple
  • Flowering period: June- August

Catnip grows best in full sun and a free draining soil, although it will tolerate a bit of shade. Once established it needs very little care, other than  protection from your cat maybe, as most seem to adore it. With this in mind it may be worth growing it away from other plants that may be damaged by rolling and frolicking felines. Some cats also  to love nibbling on it and will eventually demolish the whole plant - and in these cases an upside down  wire hanging basket secured with a couple of tent pegs  allows your moggies chomp on the catnip growing through the wire, but protect the base of the plant.

Usage

Cats are not the only animal to love catnip – it is a firm favourite with bees and pollinating insects too. The leaves and flowers are a mild sedative and is has antispasmodic properties which help relieve flatulence, bloating, cramps and colic especially if stress is a factor – although the taste is not particularly pleasant.
