Saffron is the world’s mostly costly spice; it takes about 36,000 flowers to yield about a pound (0.454kg) of stamens. It has been used as both a culinary and medicinal herb for many hundreds of years. In autumn, each saffron bulb produces between one and seven purple/pink flowers with three yellow stamens drooped over the petals and these are the part harvested, dried and used.
