If you crush the berries of this gorgeous little herb, the overriding smell is of germolene. As a native of North America and commonly known as Checkerberry, it was used by the indigenous people for easing aches and pains.

This slow growing attractive evergreen is the perfect herb for pots with its glossy leaves and tolerates a bit of shade during the day, it likes to be well drained and because it is slow growing it is important to make sure it is not potted on into containers that are too large. It is an acid loving herb and needs an ericaceous soil.
